The Risk-Screening Environmental Indicators (RSEI) model combines data on chemicals released, the toxicity of the chemicals released, the population of the area of the release, and the potential harm to humans from those chemicals. The EPA RSEI data is based upon the agency’s Toxics Release Inventory data which lists self-reported chemical releases. More information on the data can be found at https://www.epa.gov/rsei/.
The EPA data is based upon facility-reported releases and, as such, may contain errors. Data is acquired by the Polis Center by grid cell (810 sq meters) and aggregated to census geographies. At larger geographies, the actual level of pollution will not be homogenous across the entire area, but will fluctuate throughout the geography.
