The Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program produces monthly and annual employment, unemployment, and labor force data for Census regions and divisions, States, counties, metropolitan areas, and many cities, by place of residence. To create this data, BLS uses the Current Population Survey (the monthly survey of 60,000 households that generates national unemployment numbers) along with other sources like census data and state unemployment insurance data to model unemployment statistics for metros and counties.
