Data & Drafts Where You Live Matters: Exploring Health and Wellbeing in Central Indiana

March 6, 2024, 6-8 p.m.

We will share findings from a new article that provides a comparative overview and analysis of the health and well-being indicators. We will dive into the health disparities that exist by race and location, examining how these differences impact individual health outcomes and the community’s overall well-being. By identifying spatial disparities and vulnerable neighborhoods, this work will support data-driven strategies to enhance community health, address inequities, and will assist stakeholders in prioritizing resources and developing targeted health equity programming.

The Polis Center will provide the data. Bier Brewery will provide the drafts! A partnership with WFYI Public Media, IndyPL, and Bier Brewery.

Agenda: Doors will open at 6:00 and the discussion will begin promptly at 6:15.

Parking: Parking is available in the Library’s underground parking garage, which can be accessed via Pennsylvania St.

COVID-19: Guests will be asked to adhere to any COVID-19 precautions that are in place at the time of the event. Central Library does not currently have an active mask mandate in place, so we ask attendees to please use their own personal discretion.

Data & Drafts Indianapolis Racial Equity Report Card & Police Use of Force

August 22, 2024 6-8 p.m.

The Polis Center has been developing reports and tools to help better understand the complexities of racial disparities as well as the cradle-to-prison pipeline in Indianapolis. On August 22 at 6 p.m., Polis Center analysts illustrated the many ways the newly developed Indianapolis Racial Equity Report Card can help make sense of various conditions and circumstances in Indianapolis. We shared findings from the 2024 IMPD Use of Force Report we developed in partnership with Faith in Indiana. We compared those results to findings from the Indianapolis Racial Equity Report Card in hopes of identifying trends, themes, and solutions.

Data and Drafts: Evictions and foreclosures in Indiana–a data dashboard preview

October 5, 2023, 6 – 7:30 p.m.

Interactive online dashboards have been expanding across the country for eviction data, but often a disconnect still exists in passing off that important data to community members and organizations to actually instill positive change. The Polis Center is developing a new statewide dashboard and tool–with support from New America, a “think and action” tank which focuses on equity at the center of its research and policy recommendations–that will help users better understand trends and relationships between evictions and societal factors. The goal is to raise awareness of evictions and foreclosures in Indiana and provide a resource to empower communities to instill change. Partners include WFYI Public Media, and New America.

Data and Drafts: Indianapolis Racial Equity Report Card

November 17, 2022

On November 17, 6-7:30 p.m., we asked participants for input on our new initiative, the Indianapolis Racial Equity Report Card. Racial disparities define daily life in Indianapolis. For example, racial segregation has created huge differences in life expectancy between neighboring communities. White households make $26,000 more per year on average than Black households. Only around 40 percent of Latino households own their home compared to two thirds of white households. The event purpose was to gather community feedback during this initial phase of the project, although we shared some initial findings. The project process moving forward includes additional community forums to gather information, broad community feedback on initial drafts, and a final report published in 2024. The report will be updated annually thereafter.
