6. Working with the Map

In Chart View, your profile will have a map card. The map card is different from other cards. It cannot be moved, and you cannot add more map cards. Instead, you decide what data will be shown in the map.

6.1. Map Vulnerabilities

To map a vulnerability indicator, open the menu on the card you’d like to map and select “Map This Data”. You can only map one vulnerability at a time. When you decide to map a vulnerability card, it replaces the vulnerability card that was already in the map.

Once you’ve added a vulnerability indicator, like poverty rate, to your map, you can change how you want to map that data. Open the map menu to see your options.

Poverty rate can be mapped as the total rate, by race, or by gender. If you choose a breakdown like by race or by gender, you’ll then need to choose which race or gender you want to show on the map. In this example we’ve chosen Hispanic.

After you hit update or close the menu, the map will now show the poverty for Hispanics. In other words, the number of Hispanics in poverty as a percent of all Hispanics.

The geography shown on the map is not dependant on your selected area. In the examples above, the profile was based on Warren Township. But the map of poverty rate was shown by census tract. We choose the display geography for each indicator based on how the data is available. Census tracts often are the best balance between detail (small geographic areas) and accuracy (lower margins of error).

6.2. Map Assets

You can many as many assets simultaneously as you like. Each time you add an asset card to your profile, that asset type will appear on the map as points.

Click on any point in the map to see the name of that asset. In the example below, we’ve added traditional public schools to the map and clicked on Brookview Elementary.

The assets on the map can be adjusted through the map menu, just like vulnerabilities. Open the map menu and click on the “Assets” tab. Use the checkboxes to turn layers on or off. In the example below, we have three layers in the map, traditional public schools, fire stations, and food retail. Food retail is the only layer turned on.

Click the green filter icon to only see the part of a layer you’re interested in. For example, in food retail, we can turn off restaurants and only see the locations of farmers markets or grocery stores.

6.3. View Legend

By default, the map legend is closed so you can see the data more easily. Click “Legend” to open the legend. Click again to close it. You will see a legend for the vulnerabilities card you added to the map, as well as for all the asset types you’re mapping.
